The Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS) is an international multi-stakeholder initiative founded in 2006 that promotes the use and growth of responsible production of soy, through the commitment of the main stakeholders of the soy value chain and through a global standard for responsible production.

On May 2009 in the Annual General Assembly meeting in Brazil, the Principles & Criteria – field test version was approved. Currently, the field testing period is finishing, in which the standard was tested to obtain feedback from producers. The approximate amount of total hectares involved in the tests was of 224.000 and the expected soy volume after the tests (tons) is of 650.000. Another important step was the development of National Interpretations of the document for the countries of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, India, and recently Bolivia was included in the process.

The RTRS has also been working on issues such as chain of custody, payment for environmental services, compliance with UE RED, HCVA, among other things. More details and definitions taken so far as regards these processes may be found in the current projects section.

The Association distinguishes between Participating and Observing Members. Membership is open to actors of the soy value chain and civil society who may apply to become a Participating Member in one of these three constituencies:

  • Producers
  • Industry, Trade & Finance
  • Civil Society Organizations.

Only individuals or organisations such as regulatory authorities, governmental agencies, consulting and auditing firms, academia and donor organisations, which do not belong to one of the three constituencies, may request membership as Observing Members.
The RTRS's main instrument is dialogue between groups with different interests and backgrounds, in order to define common ground for action. The Round Table guarantees that each constituency has equall rights to propose specific agendas for discussion.

The Round Table on Responsible Soy Association was founded in  Switzerland, while the Executive Secretariat is based in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
