Does the RTRS prevent displacement of indigenous people and smallholders by big producers? |
Yes. The RTRS standard ensures that certified soy producers fully recognize the rights of indigenous people and smallholders. In regions characterized by traditional land use, conflicts over land use have to be avoided or resolved. In cases of disputed land rights, comprehensive and participatory community right assessments must be carried out. The RTRS standard requires documented evidence that affected communities have given free, prior and informed consent and have received proper compensation. There must be evidence of fair and transparent communication between producers and communities. Production in indigenous territories, or on lands of which ownership cannot be proven, cannot be certified. |
