I am delighted to announce that at the beginning of 2011 the world will be able to consume responsible soy, RTRS certified. After years of multi-stakeholder consensus seeking on what involved soy value chain key actors understand by responsible soy production, processing and consumption, the RTRS realized this important step.

Report on the Fifth International Conference

The members at the RTRS General Assembly in June 2010 approved RTRS Standard - Version 1.0

During the next couple of months the following mechanisms will be finalized and put in place:
1) Certification system available for producers to implement the RTRS Standard at company level.
2) A mechanism for the Chain of Custody with the different options:
- For the physical flow of soy: Mass Balance site level and Segregation.
- For non-physical flow: A Certification Trade Platform will be created (comparable with Book & Claim of the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil, through which certificates are being sold and bought on a virtual platform).
At the beginning of 2011 RTRS soy will be available for the market place, RTRS certified..
The RTRS is the owner of the Standard. In order to guarantee the integrity of the certification process at both producer and chain of custody level the RTRS will approve Accreditation Bodies that will be undertaking the accreditation according the RTRS verification System.

Last June 9 and 10, the Fifth International Conference on Responsible Soy “Sustainability is our Responsibility” took place at Club Transatlántico in Sao Paulo (Brazil), where different perspectives regarding the soy value chain sustainability were introduced. For two days, over 180 people from all around the world enjoyed presentations given by the 30 guest speakers invited by the RTRS. In that sense, successful experiences, opportunities, transformation possibilities, and challenges are the key words that define the Fifth Conference’s success.

Among other topics, the different Conference panels offered examples of initiatives promoting environmental conservation, different policies driving the concept of sustainable management, high conservation area mapping initiatives, and results of field tests of the Principles and Criteria on responsible soy (PyC) in different countries carried out by big, medium and small producers.

The message was very encouraging. The strategic importance of the RTRS for the soy value chain was emphasized as a platform for participation and coordination  of sustainable growth...
