| The Second Roundtable Conference on Responsible Soy was held from
August 31 until September 2 in Asunción, Paraguay. The event
was attended by over 200
participants from a wide range of stakeholders and countries
involved in the soy chain of value, such as producer groups, exporters,
crushers, agribusiness, financial institutions, together with various
social and environmental NGOs committed to sustainable agriculture,
conservation or rural development. The Second Conference adopted the
motto “From Problems to Solutions”, thus emphasizing the
overall goal of the Roundtable to build widespread consensus around
a responsible model for the production, trading, distribution and
consumption of soy. The event was held at the Asunción Yacht
& Golf Club Paraguayo, and was formally inaugurated by the Vice-President
of Paraguay, Luis Alberto Castiglioni. Numerous innovative experiences
from soy producing countries such as Argentina, Brasil, Paraguay,
Bolivia, Uruguay, India and China were presented during the Plenary
sessions, together with other proactive experiences and case studies
from the perspectives of consumer nations.
In addition to the Plenary Sessions, the event provided an opportunity
for a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives during the working
group sessions, where the focus of discussion centered upon the
key impacts identified by the Roundtable at the Technical Workshop
held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in April 2006. Working Group participants
also debated the way forward for the Initiative, arriving at a consensus
in principle on the need to consolidate the RTRS into the future. The various comments made by participants
during the working group sessions will provide valuable input for
the RTRS to perfect the Draft
Principles of the Roundtable based upon the discussions
held in Sao Paulo. All input and feedback will be made available
to participants and public on the RTRS website, in addition to being
distributed in upcoming newsletters. The RTRS invites and welcomes
all stakeholders and interested parties to make further comments
to these documents in order to strengthen the aims and process of
the RTRS in the future.
