1ST ROUNDTABLE ON SUSTAINABLE SOY CONFERENCE

More than 220 people, representing family agriculture, large scale producers, social, environmental and indigenous community organizations, trade and industry, participated in the discussions during the First Global Roundtable on Sustainable Soy, held in Foz do Iguaçu on March 17 and 18, 2005.

For the first time different sectors related to soy production were able to exchange views and share ideas regarding the expansion and consequences of global soy production to meet world demand and the need to adopt Criteria and Principles that ensure the sustainability of soy production throughout the chain of value. After two days of discussion in both Plenary Sessions and Working Groups, the participants decided to continue with the dialogue initiated by the Conference.




FOZ DO IGUAÇU GENERAL AGREEMENT

At Foz do Iguaçu, on 17-18 March 2005, the participants of the “First Roundtable on Sustainable Soy Conference”, representing different sectors such as big and small soy producers, soy processors, input suppliers, industry and trade, government and environmental organizations, the indigenous and scientific communities, and investors, appreciate the importance of having started a dialogue on the issue of soy and agree upon the following:

1) To acknowledge that soy production brings about social, economic, environmental and institutional benefits and problems;

2) To continue with the process for addressing these problems and develop and reinforce the chain for responsible soy production;

3) To ensure that this is a transparent, open, multi-sectoral, participatory and decentralized process.

4) To take into account issues discussed in the working groups in all future work.

SOCIAL NGO FOR THE ORGANIZING COMMITEE.

As a result of the First Global Roundtable Conference on Sustainable Soy, the Organizing Committee (OC) is in the process of restructuring its governance structure so as to incorporate new members, representing a wide range of players from soy producing and trading sectors. The OC is currently seeking to incorporate a social NGO and invites suitable institutions interested in the process to send their expressions of interest or queries.
